The Holy Grail theme emerged at the time of the crusades when it was allegedly the cup used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. Writing at the time of the crusades, Robert de Borron said that this Cup was brought to Britain by Joseph of Arimathea, in whose tomb Jesus was confined after the crucifixion. The Holy Grail was then associated with the court of King Arthur, presumably because of Arthur's popularity throughout Europe when his stories were told by the troubadours to the crusading armies. This poses the question, was this a Christian secret, known to those who had kept quite about it until then, otherwise they would have been branded heretics. If so, sneaking this secret into the system in this way was a stroke of genius but what this secret may have involved is surely a story worth telling.
